Bayou Maharajah Screening

bayou_screening

Join us on Thursday, Oct. 6 for a special screening of Bayou Maharajah at the Maple Leaf (8316 Oak St.). Funds raised from the event will benefit Team NOMC in the 2016 NAMI Walk.

The NOMC Funky Butts, this year’s NAMI Walks fundraiser team, present a special screening of Bayou Maharajah at the historic Maple Leaf Bar, where James Booker often played.

James Booker, known to his fans as the Bayou Maharajah, attracted audiences the world over with his unique virtuosic style combining classical, gospel, stride, jazz piano. In private, Booker self-medicated his mental illness with drugs and alcohol and routinely checked himself into Charity Hospital’s mental ward. In 1983 Booker was left unattended for hours in the Emergency Room. He died before receiving treatment at the age of 43. The film is a tragic modern story that highlights how a lack of resources can lead to disaster for the crown jewel of New Orleans’ culture.

WHEN: Thursday, October 6th | SHOWTIME @ 8:00 PM
