TIMES SQUARE TO JACKSON SQUARE

Katrina Evacuee Cycles Home to Big Easy

NEW YORK, August 2007 – Forced from his home by Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans native Pearce Grieshaber will pedal his way back home from New York City. Grieshaber leaves Times Square at 9:00 am on August 29, marking the second anniversary of the disaster, and will ride his bicycle southward along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Cycling more than 2000 miles, Grieshaber plans to arrive in New Orleans on October 15.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Grieshaber’s attachment to the city is strong. “New Orleans is more than a city,” he says. “It is a culture, a state of mine, a place unlike any other.” Grieshaber has enjoyed the hospitality of New York for the past two years, but always planned to return to New Orleans. Once his journey is complete, Grieshaber will apply to the New Orleans Fire Department for training.

Grieshaber believes that musicians are one of New Orleans’ greatest assets, making the city “the beautiful, creative, wonderful place that she is.” Inspired by the struggle of the city’s musicians, Grieshaber has dedicated his bike trip to help raise funds for the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic (NOMC).

NOMC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to sustain Louisiana’s musicians in body, mind and spirit by developing access to primary care, preventative health services, as well as social and occupational outreach. The organization was founded in 1998 through a collaboration between LSU Healthcare Network, Daughters of Charity Services of New Orleans, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation.

More information about Grieshaber’s bike trip can be found at nyc2nola.blogspot.com. For information about NOMC programs or to make a donation, please visit www.neworleansmusiciansclinic.org.
