Music-As-Medicine

Music Therapy for Cancer Patients

The New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic & Assistance Foundation is proud to provide free music therapy services for cancer patients through partnerships with Ochsner Health and Touro.

Led by a certified music therapist, these sessions use music as a therapeutic tool to support emotional well-being, reduce stress, and enhance quality of life throughout the cancer journey.

Music therapy is offered at no cost to eligible patients and is designed to complement – not replace – medical treatment.

What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is an evidence-based healthcare profession that uses music interventions to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs. Sessions may include live music, guided listening, relaxation techniques, singing, songwriting, or other personalized musical experiences based on a patient’s preferences and goals.

Unlike simply listening to music, music therapy is provided by a trained and credentialed music therapist who tailors each session to the patient’s unique needs and circumstances.

Benefits of Music Therapy for Cancer Patients

Reduce anxiety, stress, and emotional distress

Decrease perception of pain, fatigue, and discomfort related to cancer treatment

Promote relaxation, improving mood and emotional well-being during treatment

Support coping and resilience throughout the cancer journey

Provide comfort, connection, and an outlet for emotional expression

Enhance quality of life during treatment and recovery

Create a sense of normalcy and enjoyment during hospitalization or treatment appointments

Music therapy is increasingly recognized as a valuable supportive care service in oncology because it can help patients feel more comfortable, empowered, and emotionally supported while undergoing treatment. Studies have demonstrated benefits for anxiety, pain, fatigue, distress, and overall quality of life among patients receiving cancer care.
